What is microdermabrasion and how does it work?
The procedure is performed with a jet of fine mineral crystals passing over the skin’s surface by creating a gentle vacuum. The crystals gently exfoliate the outmost layer of skin known as the stratum corneum removing dead epithelial cells on the surface of the skin and oily plugs in pores. Collagen formation is
stimulated by the mild, controlled procedure.
What does it treat?
Microdermabrasion can smooth wrinkles and fine lines, reduce the appearance of scars, and brighten skin tone. The most commonly treated areas include the face, chest, shoulders, back and hands. By removing a top layer of skin, microdermabrasion is believed to stimulate the body to increase cell turnover and to produce collagen. One Microdermabrasion session is roughly equal to three 30% glycolic acid peels or one 70% peel.

What is the procedure like?
The procedure is conducted using a handheld device that sprays very fine particles onto your face while simultaneously vacuuming them away. Sometimes an abrasive handheld device is used instead. Both devices exfoliate the top layer of skin. You may feel the sanding, but this is not painful thus anesthesia is not required. The whole procedure usually requires less than an hour. Once the skin is treated, the skin is cleaned of stray particles, dried, and an ointment or moisturizer is applied.
What is the recovery time?
Microdermabrasion is non-invasive procedure with little discomfort or recovery time. There is minimal to no discomfort but some patients may experience a slight tingling afterward. Rarely the skin may appear slightly red which lasts 12 to 24 hours. It is important not to exercise immediately after the treatment because perspiration will cause a stinging sensation that can last several hours. Sunscreen SPF 30 or higher should be applied immediately after and for several subsequent days. Patients who undergo Microdermabrasion should discontinue Vitamin A acids and glycolic acid creams 3 to 5 days before. These can be restarted 2 to 3 days after the procedure
How permanent is the result?
These treatments are meant to be progressive and not aggressive. Results are seen after the 3rd treatment. Treatments are initially performed every several weeks usually in a series. Regularly scheduled treatments, most often monthly, are then necessary to maintain results.
